An independent tragicomedy spoken and sung in Ancient Greek brings Aristophanes, Euripides and other classical texts into a new screen story.
The production story
Made by Iuvenalis Pictures, a team associated with Leuven’s classical-studies community, Frogs combines material from Aristophanes’ Frogs, Euripides’ Alcestis, Plato’s Symposium and the Battle of Frogs and Mice with original writing. It is not simply a filmed performance of a single ancient play.
The 72-minute film became freely available online in October 2023. Its creators describe it as the first feature entirely in Ancient Greek; this archive attributes that priority claim to them rather than independently certifying it. Oxford’s APGRD also records the 2023 film and its original upload.
Known filming locations
The creators’ published presentation identifies filming in Italy and France. The language and ancient setting do not establish a Greek filming location.
