Bernard George follows the recovery and performance of ancient Greek music through papyrus evidence, instruments and digital reconstruction.
The production story
A fragment of musical notation leads Bernard George’s film into the work of archaeomusicologist Annie Bélis and a musical treatment of Medea attributed to Carcinus. Manuscripts and instrument remains become the basis for reconstructing a lost sound world.
The investigation culminates in performance at the ancient theatre of Arles. O2B records a 2021 broadcast year; ARTE lists the same production year. The film’s alternative French and English titles refer to this work, rather than separate productions.
