Philipp Frank's ‘Mykonos Lightcodes’ projected light onto stone and cactus at Scorpios. The official programme describes 21 projected forms, turning the venue's existing surfaces into the field of the work rather than building a neutral screen in front of them. Visitors saw an artwork that depended on the texture, irregularity and position of those natural elements as much as on the projected image.
Dusk was integral to the effect: the surroundings did not disappear when the projections began, so the installation sat between visible landscape and artificial light. It is a precise example of site-specific visual production, where the location cannot simply be swapped out. Archaeopolis discusses related questions of place and audience perception in its guide to immersive events; this Lightcodes work was Frank's within the Scorpios programme.
